Home Away from Home Respite Program
Home Away from Home Respite Program
The Home Away from Home Respite Program was established in 2016 as an AmeriCorps VISTA project at SUNY Geneseo in response to an expressed community need to expand respite programs in Livingston County. The program addresses the needs of both family caregivers and their loved ones with memory loss. It offers interactive activities and socialization opportunities for older adults with mild to moderate memory loss or cognitive conditions, in a setting outside the home. This structure allows caregivers to take personal time for self-care.
In addition to activities such as crafts, conversations, games and baking, special programming is offered including virtual reality technology, therapy dog visits and music therapy.
The program is located at the Community Center of Geneseo, 11 Franklin Street, Geneseo, NY 14454 and operates on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. during the academic year and one day per week during the summer. It is staffed by a Respite Coordinator, student volunteers, and older adult volunteers.
